The first European trophy is up for grabs as Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen head to Dublin to clash in the Europa League final.

John Gibson    May 20

Last weekend marked a historic moment for Bayer Leverkusen as they secured the Bundesliga title without a single defeat throughout the campaign. Their unbeaten streak extends across all competitions, placing them just two victories away from an extraordinary unbeaten treble, with the DFB Pokal final also on the horizon. They've maintained their undefeated status for 51 games this season, and another triumph on Wednesday night would clinch their second European Cup, the first since 1998. Their journey to the final saw them conquer Roma with a 4-2 aggregate victory, overcoming Qarabag and West Ham in the knockouts.

In contrast, Atalanta is on the quest for their inaugural European Cup victory. Prior to this year, they had never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the competition. Although they are positioned to qualify for the Champions League group stages through their league standing, winning the Europa League title would be their preferred route. Their path to the final saw them eliminate Sporting Lisbon before comfortably dispatching Liverpool. Marseille fell victim to them in the semi-finals, succumbing 4-1 on aggregate.

Despite the pressure of a final, goals are anticipated. Leverkusen has netted 18 times in their last six outings while conceding just six. In their 12 Europa fixtures, they've scored 31 goals, averaging over 2.5 goals per game. Atalanta, though slightly less prolific, has found the net 22 times while conceding eight. Gianluca Scamacca poses a significant threat for Atalanta, with his six Europa League goals placing him among the top scorers. For Leverkusen, Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick lead the charge with five goals each.

The two teams have met only twice before, both encounters in the 2022 Europa League Round of 16. Atalanta emerged victorious on both occasions, advancing 4-2 on aggregate. Historically, Leverkusen has struggled against Italian opposition, winning just six out of 27 fixtures. Atalanta, albeit with a smaller sample size, has secured only three wins in 10 games. Marten De Roon's absence from the final due to a knee injury suffered in the Coppa Italia final is confirmed, while Sead Kolasinac's availability is uncertain, and Emil Holm might also miss the game. Xabi Alonso, on the other hand, has a fully fit squad at his disposal for the final.

In their recent five matches, Atalanta has won four and lost one, positioning them strongly for Champions League qualification next season. Leverkusen's impressive run includes a 2-1 victory over bottom-placed Salernitana and a convincing 3-0 win against Marseille in the Europa League semi-final second leg. Although they fell short in the Coppa Italia final, losing 1-0 to Juventus, they bounced back with a 2-0 win against Lecce in their most recent fixture. Conversely, Leverkusen has won four and drawn one of their last five games, concluding the season with an unbeaten league campaign. Their journey included a remarkable 5-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and a dominant 5-0 win against Bochum. They wrapped up the season with a 2-1 win over Augsburg.

Bayer Leverkusen are poised just two games away from completing an undefeated season, and we anticipate them taking a significant stride towards that milestone. While Atalanta is expected to provide stiff competition, Leverkusen should extend their success from the Bundesliga by clinching the European trophy.
